English Language Learners
English Language Development
The English Language Development program here at East Otero School District is designed to meet the needs of students through reading and writing instruction.
In grades K-6 we utilize the OG (Orton-Gillingham) approach to develop beginning literacy, and further reading and writing skills. For more information on the OG approach: Partnering with Childs School
In grades 7-12 we utilize classroom curriculum and scaffold instruction to include vocabulary, explicit grammar instruction, connections to Spanish, and immediate feedback on written work.
Methods of Communication
We are also dedicated to the families of our students. We have translators on staff who will be able to help you! Feel free to call your child’s school and ask for a translator.
If you have any questions regarding student learning or how to become involved as a parent, please call any of the ELD teachers in your child’s building:
La Junta Primary School: Cassandra Siefkas, firstname.lastname@example.org (719) 384-2991
La Junta Intermediate School: Rosalie Foos, email@example.com (719) 384-9151
La Junta Jr/Sr High School: Cassandra Siefkas or Rosalie Foos
ELD and COVID
We are currently developing a plan in addressing how we provide services during this time of hybrid and online options. It is likely that lessons will be live or recorded, with assignments, and possibly phone calls.
Your child’s ELD instructor will communicate expectations and give more information about Google Classroom.
